How To Create Ombre Hair Color (I Tried It!)

We talked about balayage highlights a couple of months ago, which has become synonymous with the term “ombre hair color”.  If you recall, the idea is to fade your hair color from dark at the root to light at the ends.

You all know how much I love this look, and I’ve been dying (no pun intended) to try out this method of highlighting.  Unfortunately, I had no idea how to create a natural looking fade effect.  Luckily, I stumbled onto a new website called The Beauty Department, which had a tutorial on ombre hair color!  So guess what I did last night…

Unfortunately for you non-colorists, this tutorial isn’t helpful if you’re trying to achieve this look at home.  But take these instructions into your hair stylist if you want them to try out ombre hair color on you.  I used a manikin from school and followed the photo instructions above.  I think it turned out pretty well for my first time…

Cool, right?

    Hi, I know I’m probably a little slow on the uptake, but I’m really living the ombré look still ( I’ve had red hair for the past year and feel I need a change!) I absolutely love the way you have done the ombré colouring on the manikin! Are you a professional?
    I wonder if you could offer a little advice….. my natural hair colour is very similar to that of your manikin, what type of bleach if highlighted did you use? I have heard alot of people mention pre-lightening?!
    From the picture it looks as if you have staggered the sections at different lengths, is that the best way to achieve the graduation?
    You really have done a super job, hope mine turns out as well! :)
