Seven Months Old!

Yikes… what a crazy couple of months it has been.  Hazel turned 7 months three whole weeks ago and I am just now able to blog about it.  Heart of Hazel has taken on a life of its own, which is super exciting!  But it also means that I am crazy busy.  And with a babe who seems to have a distaste for night time sleep the past few months, I am also unbelievably tired.

That said, here’s my sweet 7 month old girl:

As I was editing this photo, I looked back on her 5 month picture and I honestly can’t believe how much older she looks!  Every day she is bigger, more vocal and mobile, has more hair and seems to understand her surroundings more and more.  And while her waking-up-every-1.5-hours-to-nurse is getting SO old, I feel this desperate need to soak in every little piece of her while she’s still a baby.

My little love is still chatty as ever, but her real struggle right now is learning to crawl.  She has the arm strength and can do the right motions with her legs, but she hasn’t been able to put the two together yet.  Poor thing just lays on her tummy and grunts, kicking her legs as if it will propel her forward.  It’s kind of heartbreaking, but I’m trying to give her the space to figure it out before I swoop in and prop her back up to sitting.

Because she’s so close to becoming mobile, Travis and I are coming up with a game plan for baby proofing.  I’m hoping we can find a way to do it without completely sacrificing the look of our home, but I’m probably kidding myself :)

Six Months Old!

How did this happen?  There is no way that my baby girl is half a year old already, right?!

This month I’m feeling SUPER nostalgic for my bitty baby and both excited by and sad to see my daughter turning into her own independent person.  In the past couple weeks, all traces of my newborn have been erased and replaced by a silly, sweet, opinionated little girl who is learning new things every day!

We are on the cusp of a lot of new things in our house.  Hazel is just starting to eat food (we are trying Baby Led Weaning… anyone had success with it?)  She is sitting up confidently on her own and wants to play that way more and more.  She takes baths in the tub by herself now (thanks to an awesome bath ring we found on Amazon.)  She played in the swing at the park for the first time.  And she’s starting to understand the sign language we’ve been using with her (and I SWEAR she is starting to make the sign for “milk”, but I could be crazy).

We are also considering sleep training, which I swore I would NEVER do.  But this girl is up every 1-3 hours all night long and I am losing my mind.  I’m still considering the different options and hoping we find a gentle solution that will work for our family.

As sad as I am to say goodbye to my tiny babe, I am super excited for what the second half of this first year will bring.  It’s hard to believe that she’ll ever be more fun than she is now, but I know that it’s only just begun…

Five months old!

Happy holidays, my sweets!  I hope you’ve been having a lovely time with family, friends, food and the like.  I’ve been meaning to post Hazel’s five month update, but we left for a family trip to Portland the day after Christmas and time has escaped me (what else is new?)  Anyway, here it is!

Our little smush is learning so much everyday and gaining lots of new skills.  She is SO CLOSE to rolling from back to tummy (which made capturing this photo quite challenging) and I have a feeling that she might be sitting up for next month’s pic.

She is also starting to make a few babbling sounds and lots of “ahhhhh” sounds.  She loves listening to her own voice— especially screaming and fake coughing.  She is smilier than ever and very giggly, but when she’s mad she is MAD.  We’ve got a passionate lady on our hands.  (Seriously, this girl has a set of lungs on her.)

We still haven’t cracked the daytime napping and I am resigning myself to the fact that I may not have a very good napper.  One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned thus far is that it’s not worth resisting your child’s natural tendencies… it just makes everyone more miserable.  And on the random days when she takes a longer nap, we celebrate and enjoy it as a little victory.  (Ironically, she has been napping GREAT in Portland.  Which has been awesome, but also a bit frustrating since it confirms that she CAN nap and that she’s happier when she does.)

Anyway, I hope you all have an absolutely fabulous new year!  I’ve been totally lagging on posting our “monthly favorites” and I’ve been getting lots of requests for them.  So my goal in the coming week or two is to compile my must-have list and share them with you. Keep your eyes peeled!

Four Months Old!

I will probably feel like this every month, but four months is definitely my favorite age so far!  After five weeks, Hazel is finally coming out of the big developmental growth spurt she was going through at three months.  She is less fussy, more willing to take naps (although she will rarely sleep longer than 40 minutes anymore) and she has come out the other side a more curious and engaged baby.

Travis noted that before this mental leap, she was curious, but unable to act on her curiosities.  NOW, when she sees something she is interested in, she tries to interact with it.  She will lean, tilt or roll toward her toys and puts anything she can find in her mouth.  She complains if we leave the room and perks back up once she has someone in her sight.  Everyday, her personality shines through more and more.  She’s so much fun and I know it’s only going to get better!
