Wedding Wednesday: Choosing An Officiant

I am enjoying a nice long Winter break from cosmetology school, which means I am in full-blown wedding mode.  I put the planning on hold somewhat during school, so I’ve got lots to do in the next month or so.

One of my biggest goals of the moment is to find the officiant for our ceremony.  Most of the planning so far has been geared toward the reception, but the ceremony is really the most important part of the day.  In other words, choosing the officiant is a big deal!

Neither Travis or I grew up in religious families, and our ceremony won’t be held in a church, so that pretty much rules out any pastor or rabbi from leading our ceremony.  We have considered the possibility of having a friend get ordained.  We’ve also thought about asking a friend of the family to do it.

The truth is, we’re not really sure who to pick or how to go about asking them.

Married gals: who lead your wedding ceremony?  How did you make your decision?  Any advice?

And for those of you who are not-yet-married: Do you already know who you’d like to officiate?  What do you think about choosing a friend and having them get ordained?
