Life Without Lighting

The last five days may have been the most hectic and overwhelming of my life: moving to a new town, the engagement (still not used to saying that!), 4th of July gatherings… exhausting but wonderful.  Unfortunately, I am back to the real world this morning, and let me tell you— it’s dark!

Not in a depressing way.  Our house just has a mysterious inability to light itself.  In a way, it’s nice to have windows that don’t face directly into the sun— it’s HOT here, and I’m a wouss when it comes to these things.  But on top of the lack of natural lighting, about half of our light switches aren’t connected to anything!  Which means it’s time to get creative with lamps, lanterns, candles, etc…

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

In our living room, we’re suffering from the lack-of-a-light-switch syndrome, so we purchased this clean and simple lamp from Ikea (our shade is in a linen finish).

Our patio needs both lighting and pizzaz, so we’re hanging mini-lanterns, similar to these.

We converted our dining room into an office space for Travis.  The photo on the left shows the original light fixture (SO ugly!), so we removed it and covered it with this simple white chinese paper lantern for now.  It’s definitely better, but perhaps not all the way completed…

Our bedroom has one lamp already, but I’d love to get a couple of the Kathryn lamps from Crate and Barrel for our bedside tables.

Do you have any issues with lighting in your home?  Have you found any solutions that you especially love?  Anything that might help me out a bit?

Travis’ office space looks so great!
