Don’t get me wrong, I obviously love the guy, and since he’s with me he clearly has great taste :) However, if it were up to me, we would be living in a French flea market, and if it were up to him, we’d live on a pirate ship.

How to compromise? Well, the first thing we did was choose a theme that we both like so that we have some idea of the things to seek out. We made the theme fun so we could both remember it, and put elements of both of your personalities into it. Our theme is “Ship Captain with a French Call Girl on Board.” Sounds pornographic, but he loves Master and Commander, and I love Marie Antoinette. All of our decorative efforts, therefore, are going to be a blend of rich French textiles and old fashioned nautical items. I may even get my shabby French chair.  Here are a few of our inspirations:

I’ve had my fair share of massages over the past ten years, and I always make sure to request a woman because that’s what I’m used to.  There must have been a hiccup in communication at the spa yesterday because in walked a 20-something man to take me into the massage room.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being massaged by a man, but for me personally, I became very aware of the fact that I was practically naked in a dimly lit room with a guy that wasn’t my husband.  It just felt… wrong.  The masseuse was very professional and totally great at his job, but I was never fully able to relax— such a bummer!

I’m curious how you ladies feel about this, and if you think that being married makes a difference.

This Mother’s Day is extra special for me.  We have a brand new mama in our family:

This Mother’s Day is bittersweet, having recently lost my amazing grandmother.  But I look forward to take a little extra time this weekend to honor and celebrate her amazing spirit.

I grew up in a beach town, and I have to admit that I wasn’t always good about putting on sunscreen (especially in my teens.)  I’ve been known, even in recent years, to skip sunscreen on short poolside outings and I’m determined to take better care from here on out.

The truth is, we should all be wearing sunscreen every day (not just when it’s hot out.)  So I’m officially— and publicly— pledging to be a daily sunscreen wearer.  I know my skin will thank me later in life, and I proved to myself yesterday that I can still get a tan while staying protected from the sun.

Most of us agreed right away that the money spent toward a wedding planner would be well worth it in her situation.  But, how do you feel about hiring one when you’re getting hitched in your own county?

There’s a huge push for brides to be ultra DIY these days, and as much as I love that, I also think it’s a little unfair.  Many elements of our wedding were done by us, but during the course of our engagement, I had three 6-week chunks of time off from school/work/life where I was able to turn the wedding into my full time job.  (I also had a ton of help from my mom!)  Had that not been the case, planning my wedding would have been nearly impossible without a wedding planner of some kind.

Planners have relationships with vendors that can save you a lot of time searching on Yelp or asking other brides for their opinions.  They have enough experience to guide you through the timeline of your reception so that guests don’t get bored and you don’t feel too rushed.  They take a lot of the stress out of planning your wedding, but I can see how they could take some of the fun out of it, too.

Since our wedding was held at my parents house, we hired a day-of coordinator.  She didn’t plan the wedding, but she made all of the little details run smoothly on the big day.  I’m SO glad we had her— she was a huge help, but all of the decisions were still up to Travis and me.

I really don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to plan your wedding— there are pros and cons to doing everything yourself versus hiring some help.  But I’m dying to know what you would choose!

Christian Louboutin’s “Staratata” heels cost about $995, which as we all know would be over a thousand dollars with tax. They’re undeniably beautiful! But if you want to drop a digit from the price, try Jessica Simpson’s “Evangela” heels, $98. This imitation has been all over the blogosphere lately, so I kept looking, and found more examples of style steals.

Report Signature makes a beautiful stripy black heel called the Williston. It’s priced at $225, which is a far cry better than the Louboutin prices. But if you’re looking for a better bargain, Jessica Simpson makes a similar version, called the “Malika,” for the same lower price of $98.

Pink and black are beautiful together, so it’s no wonder that multiple upscale brands are combining them in ballet flats. The Marc by Marc Jacobs Soft Ballerina Flats retail for $195, which is a lot of money for a slip-on shoe. But you can get a near-identical look with the Jessica Simpson Madisen for just $69.

Morale of the story: Jessica Simpson rocks!  Also, it’s nice to know that anyone can get a high-end look without a huge budget.

But due to some health stuff and the fact that I wanted to feel my absolute best, I decided to train for a race.

If you’ve been following the blog, you know that I ran a 10k in February, which was a really big deal for me and brought me a lot of satisfaction.  By then, I had already discovered that “runner’s high” that everyone talks about (the one that I thought was made up until a life-changing 5 miler in late December.)

After the 10k, I set my sights on a half marathon.  I trained and pushed my body beyond what I ever thought I could do, and on Sunday the big race had finally arrived.

I woke up at 4:30 on Sunday morning, full of nerves and excitement and disbelief that I was actually going to run 13.1 miles.  I had completed 11 miles in my training, and I was praying that the adrenaline and excitement would take me farther than I had ever gone.  My dad was running the race with me, to support and coach me as I ran (which turned out to be infinitely more important than I ever could have anticipated.)

My goal was to run the half in 2 hours and 8 minutes (a 9:45 pace), which was an ambitious goal for me, but I knew it was possible.  The race started off slow— it’s hard to run with 2,000 other people crowded around you!— and by the second mile when everyone had spread out, I’d already lost a little bit of time.

The course ran through wine country.  Translation: it was MUCH hillier than 99% of my training runs through the relatively flat Golden Gate park.  Needless to say, I continued to lose little bits of time and then gain them back as I navigated the hills.

When I reached mile ten, my body started to fight me.  I was tired in a way that I can’t put into words.  I knew I had to stay hydrated, but drinking made me nauseous.  I had 3.1 miles left and it felt like an impossible feat.  It’s amazing how much mental strength it takes to do long runs.  This is where my dad’s support made all the difference.

He encouraged me up every hill, reminded me that it was almost over, and wouldn’t let me slow down because he knew how badly I wanted to hit my goal time.  I had nearly a minute to make up in the last mile, and I started to feel the disappointment of not meeting my goal before I had even crossed the finish line.

But somehow, thanks to my dad’s encouragement and the sheer will to finish what I started, I finished the race in 2 hrs. 7 mins. and 06 seconds, narrowly achieving the time I had trained for.

I should have been happy, but something else happened instead.  Almost instantly, my body went into shock. I was dizzy, nauseous, disoriented.  I went to the med tent and asked for an IV, thinking I must have been severely dehydrated.  But after two IV’s and a few hours of medical attention, it was clear that hydration wasn’t the issue.  I was suffering from extreme exhaustion, likely caused by factors outside of the race.  Pushing my body for 13.1 miles literally pushed me over the edge, and I spent the rest of the day in a completely altered state.

Even now, days later, I’m still drained.  But I’m still proud to say that I achieved something I never thought I’d be able to do.  If I were to do it again, I might have postponed the race until I was able to reduce the level of stress in the rest of my life.  But all things considered, I’m happy to say I’m a half marathon survivor!

Bubble bath + book: although I could separate the two, reading in the tub requires a guilty pleasure paperback and guarantees you a long soak in the muscle-relaxing hot waters. Your body will thank you, and your mind can move from mergers to throbbing manhoods, if only for fifteen minutes.

Call your best friend: When was the last time you called someone on the phone to talk? Even if it’s recent, stepping outside to hear a familiar voice can be a grounding experience and a great one. I feel like I never make phone calls these days, and texts just aren’t the same as chatting and giggling with a friend.

Breathe: This might seem like a simple enough one. “Breathe for fifteen minutes? I breathe all the time!” Yet breathing mindfully is one of the best things you can do to clear your head. There’s a reason that the last ten minutes of every yoga class is dedicated to meditation. Focusing inward for a few peaceful minutes is like spring cleaning for your soul! For $0.99 you can download the Long Deep Breathing app, which helps you track your breathing in a way designed to lower your anxiety.

Make something: Even if you’re not the artsy type, sites like Polyvore and Etsy allow you to make visual stylesheets or collections that will still get you in the crafty spirit.

Walk down a new street: Maybe it’s your lunch break and you’re going to get some food. By walking instead of driving or stopping to eat at a park you’ve never seen before, you can maximize your fifteen minutes by turning it into break from the familiar. Isn’t that what a vacation is? Exploring the world around you can be as simple as turning down a new street or getting a little more natural light than you usually would.

Whatever you do, make sure to take a few minutes each day to love yourself.  This little investment in your sanity will pay off big time!

I completed a half marathon!

Whether your theme is an inside joke for your friends or just something you enjoy—a book, a time in history, celebrity trainwrecks— you still have to focus on a few key elements: costumes, decoration, refreshments, and entertainment.

Costume or no costume?

That’s up to you, but remember, some people will forget to dress up and some people don’t want to. That’s a good reason to keep something small at the front table that guests can use to get into the spirit. It’s easier to dance in a superhero mask or a pair of fake glasses than it is to in a cape or a professor’s outfit. For a Hunger Games party I would buy or make Mockingjay pins. You can also put out name tags for any type of affair and let people declare their character, or in this case, district.

Decorations

The way that you decorate will effect whether your guests get into the theme. You could put up a “Welcome to the 74th Hunger Games” banner or you could turn your living room into a crepe-paper forest. The level of effort should probably relate to the size of your party, although it can always be fun to transform your living space for your closest friends!

Good eats

Just like wedding cake is specific to a certain theme, it is the drinks and the snacks that can make or break your affair. For my Hunger Games party, I could make cheese buns and seaweed bread.  My personal favorite way to bring a theme onto a snack table is with more decorations. Cupcake toppings that represent the elements of your party are easy enough to buy or make, when you only need a pouf of red and orange frosting to symbolize fire or a toy bow and arrow to use as a topper. Last, make sure you create a specialty drink (whether in name or in ingredients) to keep people in the mood.

Party activities don’t have to consist of crazy drinking games. You can also host contests relating to costume, dance moves, or best off-the-cuff dirty joke (on theme, of course!). Make sure your playlist is upbeat and your guests are happy. Scavenger Hunts are always a lot of fun, and a great way to make sure you touch on every aspect of your theme. “Peeta’s favorite place” would lead you into the kitchen, of course, to check the bread box.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the Clarisonic— a handy beauty tool from the creators of the Sonicare toothbrush. It deep cleans pore by digging out dirt and grime, reduces pore size and fine lines, and helps control oil and dry patches. Sounds like a miracle tool, right?

It is – but only if you know how to properly use it.

I get a lot of questions about this device and I thought I’d clear them up (no pun intended!) right here, right now.

True or False: The Clarisonic will make me break out.

Both. The bad news is that you may. The good news is that you may not.

The Clarisonic website does not disclose this, but I can tell you from personal experience and talking to my store’s Clarisonic rep that purging is, in fact, a potential side effect. This means you may see an increase in breakouts while your skin rids itself from everything that is stuck down in your pores.

How to deal: I consulted a dermatologist and the Clarisonic rep about this. Both said to stop using the Clarisonic on acne-prone areas if you continue to breakout there. Clarisonic’s website warns not to use it over open wounds (i.e. popped pimples) and take it from me: just give your skin a breather if it goes a bit crazy! Once your skin calms down, you can start again – but do so sparingly. Which brings me to my next point.

The Clarisonic gives the best results when I use it every time I cleanse.

Not so fast, there. Trust me, if you use a Clarisonic you will see how good it feels on your skin. I got so obsessed with it that I thought the more I did it, the better my skin would be. Big mistake.

Since you are using a tool that’s foreign to your delicate skin, do your skin a favor and ease into it. Use it every other day or even just a couple times a week. Gauge how your skin reacts and if you’re okay, slowly increase your use of it.

I can use my Clarisonic an extra minute to feel super clean.

Wrong! Each time you use your Clarisonic it lasts for a minute. Don’t press the power button again for a second go-round. The first minute is enough to do the job; otherwise the Clarisonic people would have made it last longer!

The Clarisonic exfoliates my skin so I won’t ever need to use an exfoliator.

Not true, sister! It deep cleanses. Exfoliate one to three times a week, but make sure to use it with your hands and not your Clarisonic.

I really do think the Clarisonic is a great tool, but I disagree with those who say it is for everybody. All of us have different skin and different lifestyle factors that affect our reaction to certain products. You just have to find what works best for you.

Any tips for finding a good wedding caterer? I’m getting married next spring and starting to do some planning, and for some reason we’re having a really hard time finding the caterer. Any advice about where to look, and opinions on sit down vs. buffet?

For Travis and I, food was super high on our wedding priority list.  (I like to eat, what can I say?)

We considered doing a big family style, sit down dinner with overflowing plates of food at the tables so people could serve themselves (reminiscent of the holidays), but we were told that doing a buffet would flow better.  And I’m really glad we did it that way.  Here’s what I love about a buffet:

1) We had the catering coordinator load up two plates for us and put them on the head table as we were announced into the reception.  That way, when the first table was called to serve themselves, we could take a few minutes to shove some food into our mouths before we made the rounds and said hi to each table.  This was a GREAT time-saver and we got enough food to keep us going through the reception.

2) Since tables were getting food at different times, we let that dictate the timing of our “table visits”.  Once we saw everyone from a table sit down with their food, we moved on to say hi to them.  This helped the evening flow and made it possible for us to acknowledge all of our guests. (Don’t worry about people waiting in long lines for the buffet— a good catering staff knows how to move things along quickly.)

3) Everyone got to enjoy the exact food they wanted at a nice warm temperature, rather than waiting to be served a pre-chosen meal or fighting over “family style” food.  (This is a huge help when you have guests with dietary restrictions!)

So there’s my plug for buffets :)

As far as choosing a caterer, we went with a great local restaurant.  We knew their food was awesome from years of eating there and we had heard great things about their catering staff.  I think it’s worth going on Yelp or talking to other brides in your area when looking for good food because it’s about more than how everything tastes.  Our catering staff went above and beyond in SO many ways— our entire wedding went more smoothly because of them.

This product is unlike any other I have ever tried simply because of its staying power. Within hours, this astringent that is free of mineral oil, alcohol, and perfume will dry up any blemish. You need less than a pea-sized dab on the affected area, and that’s it. Just wait. I’ve applied this in the morning, made coffee, gotten dressed, and found that my pimple was already less red. I didn’t use a foundation brush until recently because I didn’t think I needed it. After all, in a world so overflowing with beauty products, some must certainly be unnecessary. It turns out, this one is important— talk about Photoshop! Essentially it’s a blending tool, smoothing out your face and perfectly layering on your foundation.  Pick up this Sonia Kashuk brush from Target and see for yourself!

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

This product keeps your eyeshadow from disappearing into your skin, leaving you with makeup that won’t budge for hours and colors that are as bright as promised. No more creases, no more glitter on your cheeks, no more reapplying eyeliner in the bathroom at work. You really do look the same at end of the day as you do at the beginning. It’s like a perfect Photoshop base upon which you can layer color upon bright color.  Pick some up at Sephora!

DiorShow Mascara by Dior

If your eyelashes are thin (or even if they’re long and beautiful) you can always make them darker, longer, thicker. This mascara does it all for you. Even on a day without any other makeup it will make you look like a celebrity faster than a Birkin bag.  Try some for yourself!

Any one of these products will touch you up so well you won’t need to be retouched. If you try them out, don’t forget to let your sister play with them too. Because if something should run in the family, it’s looking flawless.

Isn’t she a doll?  Watching her birth was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever experienced!  I’ve only been away a day and I already miss her beautiful face!

Now before I go any further let me say that at the end of the day you should do whatever you want.  If you want to have ten people standing up with you, go for it!  If you want to nix the wedding party completely, do so.  And if you and your guy want to have different numbers of bridesmaids and groomsmen, by all means.

Travis and I each had three people stand up with us.  His groomsmen consisted of his two brothers and mine.  My bridal party consisted of three close friends who I’ve known since high school.  It would have been really easy for me to go bigger— I have cousins who are like sisters to me and not including them was really hard on me.

But we chose to keep the parties small, and I’m so glad we did!  Here’s why:

-More people = more opinions. Ok, the groomsmen offered zero opinions.  But my bridesmaids had plenty!  The people pleaser in me felt the need to hear everyone out about all kinds of details, and at times even three differing opinions made me a little crazy.

-Gifts for 7 is a lot more expensive. This may sound silly, but considering all the hard work that the bridal party puts in, I really wanted to get them a special gift.  I ended up getting each of my girls Tiffany necklaces, something I wouldn’t have been able to afford had I gone with a big group of ‘maids.

-You’ll still be friends later. People who include all sorts of friends in their wedding party might look back on their wedding photos and wish that half of them weren’t littered with people they’re no longer in touch with.  I wanted to choose people who had been in my life a long time and who I’d likely stay close to.

As I said, it’s all about doing what’s right for you.  But having a small bridal party makes things a little less stressful.  And when you’re planning a wedding, that goes a looong way!

A friend of mine swears by this stuff and suggested I try it, so I picked up a tube last week and I’m thrilled with the results!  It’s a thin formula with a thick brush, meaning it gets into all the nooks and crannies.  It’s easy to layer without clumping up.  And it lasts all day without flaking!

It comes in both regular and waterproof versions and the best part: it costs only $4.79!  That’s less than a fifth of what I was paying for Lancome!

Needless to say, I’m thrilled with this find.

Katniss is known throughout the book and movie for her signature side braid, so today I thought I’d show you just how easy it is to get this cool look!

Step 1: Part your hair to the side and start on the heavier half (the half with more hair.)  Draw a diagonal part from your forehead to your side part, creating a triangle of hair.

Step 2: Separate into three sections and start braiding— but here’s where it’s a little different.  Rather than pulling each section of hair over one another, go underneath.

Step 3: As you braid, grab small sections of hair from the rest of the head and incorporate them.  (Basically, all you’re doing is a french braid, but by wrapping each section under one another rather than over, it creates this inside-out effect.)

Step 4: Continue around the head until you run out of hair to incorporate.  Then, do a plain old braid down the side.

Step 5: Secure with an elastic, and you’re ready to adventure like Katniss!

This can be tricky to do on yourself at first, but practice on a few friends and you’ll get the hang of it.  I’m not gonna lie… this style makes me miss having long hair!

1. Buy both shades. If you’re in between two shades, buy both of them and mix!  It will last you twice as long, and you’ll be able to customize your color between seasons (darker in the Summer and lighter in Winter).

2. Go for tinted moisturizer. If your skin is relatively blemish-free, a tinted moisturizer will warm you up without being cakey.  The shades are more generally categorized, so there’s a match for everyone!  (I also love tinted moisturizer because my freckles show through it :)

3. Head to the beauty counter. If you have the budget for it, high end cosmetics tend to come in a wider range of shades and the gals at the beauty counter can help you find the perfect one for you.

Remember: if you’re going to splurge on any beauty product, foundation is the one.  It can prevent blemishes, protect you from SPF damage, and it will keep your complexion from looking too pale or too bronzed.

I used the following three colors to create the ombre effect: NYC Cashmere Creme, Wet ‘n Wild I Need a Refresh-Mint, and NYC Skin Tight Denim.

I painted my nails with 2 coats of Cashmere Creme to create a base color.

Then, I painted the tip of a makeup sponge with Refresh-Mint and slowly dabbed the color onto my nail.  I started at the tip and worked toward the top so that it slowly faded into the lighter Cashmere Creme.

The Skin Tight Denim was a little too dark, so I mixed it with the Refresh-Mint and, starting again at the tip of my nail, dabbed the makeup sponge upward to blend.

I was pretty pleased with the final result, and I think with some practice and slightly more similar colors, I could create a perfect fade.

I’m also thinking the using the makeup sponge could be a cool way to create a tie-dye nail effect… ooh, lala!

My bridal shower was one of the best days of my life (check out the photos here, if you’d like).  It’s not very often that a woman gets to spend time with all of the important women in her life at once— no matter what, it’s going to be a great day.  But if you’re a bride-to-be or if you’re planning a bridal shower in the coming months, here are some tips for making it extra special…

Before the party…

Determine who is doing what. Etiquette-wise, it’s improper for the bride’s mother to throw her a shower because it’s like the family is asking for gifts.  But these days, moms are often involved.  So, bridesmaids: delegate!  If everyone takes on certain tasks, the party planning will feel less overwhelming and more fun.

Get a guest list from the bride ASAP. The bride should have names and addresses collected already, since wedding invitations often go out around the time of a bridal shower (a couple of months pre-wedding).  Make sure you get this list early on, so you know how many guests to expect.

Involve the groom. My girls surprised me with a newlywed game during my shower— complete with video responses from Travis!  It was sooo fun to see his face pop up on the screen, and I know he loved working on this little secret with my bridesmaids beforehand.

Invite people early.  Just as wedding invites go out well ahead of time, bridal showers should be planned a ways in advance.  Sure, even with lots of notice, not everyone will be able to come.  But you’ll have a better chance the earlier you send out the invitations.

The day of the party…

Dress up. My girls threw me a tea party, and almost everyone used the excuse to wear a fun, summery frock.  The bride will want to get dressed up for this special occasion— it’ll be more fun if the guests do, too!  (And make sure you give the bride-to-be a fun veil to wear for the day… I felt amazing wearing one.  It was the first time I really felt like a bride!)

Decorate! Establishing a theme can make this an easy task (for example, a Parisian bridal shower would have lots of black, white, and pink stripes and yummy macarons for guests to munch on!)  My girls put bouquets of flowers everywhere and had a table of brightly colored tea cups for party favors.

Load up on finger foods. Invite guests to bring a dish to share if preparing appetizers isn’t your forte.  Any good party starts with yummy food, right?

Play games. I believe we had 3 games at my shower… the newlywed game, the toilet paper wedding dress competition, and a fun recipe game (the girls typed up 6 recipes, but left out ingredients… whoever filled in all the correct ingredients got a prize!)  Games keep the mood light and the party moving.

And remember: as long as you keep the mood celebratory and fun, everyone is bound to have a blast!

Bathing suit season is looming (in fact, over here in sunny Santa Cruz I’ve already made it to the beach a couple of times!) and with it comes the collective pressure to lose weight and tighten up.  While crash diets and intense exercise regimes may work in the short term to lose a few pounds, we all know that the weight rarely stays off, and the whole process is usually so emotionally and physically grueling and stressful, no matter what our size, we’re not even happy!

Most people want to know what they should eat (and how much) in order to lose weight and get the body they want. But what few people realize is that HOW you eat is almost more important than WHAT you eat.  Without making a single change to someone’s diet, I can almost always help them achieve some weight loss (assuming that there is legitimate weight to lose) just by making this one simple change.

Slow down, take a breath, and relax.

The impact of stress (including stress around eating itself) on digestion and metabolism is huge!  Thanks to our club-wielding Neanderthal ancestors, our bodies have been geniusly programed to respond to stress in very specific ways.  Namely, blood and oxygen is directed away from the stomach to the head and limbs to support quick thinking and acting.  During a time of stress digestion may be greatly diminished or even completely shut down as the body assumes that all metabolic energy is needed for survival.  When a tiger is chasing you, the body is smart enough to know that digesting lunch is low on the priority list.  Unfortunately, the body can’t discriminate between running-for-your-life stress and running-late-for-work stress.

Along with reducing digestive efficiency, nutrient absorption and metabolic power, stress also stimulates the production of the hormones insulin and cortisol which have been linked to an inability to lose weight and body fat, an inability to build muscle, and a tendency to gain weight around the midsection.  In essence, a body under stress can sabotage even the healthiest of meals.

The temptation to stress around food and diet is powerful.  We stress ourselves out daily about what we should eat, what we shouldn’t eat, what we wish we could eat and what we wish we hadn’t.  Whether it’s the healthiest garden salad or the most decadent chocolate cake, your body will actually digest and metabolize more efficiently (that means more nutrients absorbed and more calories burned) if you can manage to slow down and relax.  Added bonus: the food will taste better too!

I got invited to a gala, and the dress code says:

MEN: A tuxedo, a suit, or business casual (jackets, no ties) will look sharp. Please no jeans or casual shirts.
WOMEN: Cocktail dresses and gowns are acceptable and will look beautiful on you.

What exactly does that mean? Length? Color?

Trying to determine the appropriate attire for any event can be tricky, so I’m going to break it down by category for future reference.  Check out these common dress code terms and how they translate to real life…

Casual: Anything goes with this one— women can wear jeans, sandals are appropriate.  But no matter what, especially if this is a work-related event, make sure you’re still covered up and put-together.

Semi-casual: Men should wear khakis and maybe a polo, and women would be best in a sundress or cotton skirt.  Sandals are still appropriate for the ladies.

Semi-Formal: (Other terms for this can include Sunday best, casual elegance, or afternoon elegant.)  In this situation, men should wear suits, but aren’t required to put on ties.  Women should wear dresses— something a little more substantial than a sun dress— and heels instead of sandals.

Formal: (Also called cocktail attire.)  Men should wear suits and ties.  Women should wear a nice dress, but it doesn’t have to be floor length.  (Stick with dresses right around knee length— please don’t wear something super short!)  Heels are pretty much mandatory at this point.

Black Tie Optional: Men can wear either a dark suit & tie or a tux.  Women should wear their nicest dress and a long gown is often preferred, though a modest cocktail dress would be fine.

Black Tie: Men should be in tuxes.  Women can wear the same thing they’d wear to a “black tie optional” event.

It sounds like Amber’s gala is pretty flexible, if men can wear either a tux or a suit without a tie.  For this reason, I’d stick with a knee-length cocktail dress, rather than a full-length gown.  (I hate feeling like I’m the dressiest person in the room!)  If it’s an evening event, dark colors are a safe choice (navy, plum, black), but feel free to pair your look with a pop of color, either jewelry, shoes, or a cute clutch.

My number one favorite thing about the event was the flow.  Rather than trying to control the large group, the hosts set up mini stations all over the house that guests could visit at their leisure, in between getting a snack and catching up with friends.  And the stations were great!  They had…

1) An alphabet scrapbook table. I think this was everyone’s favorite activity.  Before the party started, the hosts picked out 26 cute pieces of scrapbook paper and glued a letter to each of them.  Then, they filled a super-long table with crafty supplies, pictures, stamps, etc…  Each guest had the opportunity to pick a letter and make a page for the “alphabet book”, so the baby will grow up learning her letters from the people she loves most!  Genius!

2) A diaper raffle corner. As part of the shower invitation, each guest was invited to bring a pack of diapers and drop them off in a cute bassinet as they walked in.  In exchange, we each got a raffle ticket with an opportunity to win some fun prizes!  So simple and easy, and the guest of honor got a TON of diapers!

3) A baby bottle guessing game. How many sour patch fit in a baby bottle?  We all visited this station, took a look, and made our best guess.  The answer: 67!  (I should know, I won this one :)

4) The classic string game. Every baby shower must involve guessing the size of the belly, right?  There was a fourth station with string and scissors for us to guess how big around the guest of honor was, which is always a hoot!

There was great food all afternoon, lots of “ooh”ing and “ahh”ing over all of the sweet little gifts (which they saved until the end of the shower, so people didn’t feel pressure to stay), and plenty of activities to keep the event moving along without being too regimented.  (I’m not gonna lie… I definitely told my mom to take notes when the time comes for me to have a baby shower of my own :)

I’ve been loving the ombre effect that people have been doing with nail glitter lately, where it is super condensed at the top of the nail and then slowly fades out.  I went for the same effect here by painting my nail with a top coat and then using tweezers to place them in the right spot.  To finish it off, I did another thick top coat over all of the micro beads to hold them in place.

At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about the look of a bunch of 3-D beads sitting on top of my nail.  But the more I look at it, I think I’m a fan.  What about you?

I have a wedding dress that I bought when I was with my ex-fiance, but the wedding was called off. Now I have an amazing Maggie Sottero dress hanging in my closet, and don’t know what to do with it.  My mom wants me to hold onto it for my next wedding (whenever that is) and maybe just change it up a little, like adding a colored sash or something.

I am split on making my decision. On one hand, I already have a dress, so thats one less expense down the road. On the other hand, that was a dress purchased for the wedding of my ex.  What do you think? Should I hang onto it, and just alter it in some way? Or sell it and get a whole new one when that time comes?  What did you do with your dress after the wedding?

Kristine, I can see how this would be such a tough decision!  It’s so much more than a dress— it’s a super emotional symbol of your past relationship, and that’s hard to part with.  But the truth is, that wedding dress was meant for a different wedding, a different man, and a different you.

You’re supposed to feel like a million bucks on your wedding day.  It’s an exciting new chapter and a time to look to the future.  Personally, I know I’d feel pretty uncomfortable wearing a dress that reminded me of a past relationship.  And there certainly shouldn’t be any pressure from your mom to hang onto it if that doesn’t feel right to you!  Just like the rest of your wedding day, the dress you choose is up to you and should reflect what you really want on your big day.

If selling your dress feels right to you, there are a few places you can list it.  Plenty of brides peruse Craigslist for wedding-related needs.  But you can also visit Preowned Wedding Dresses and Wedding Bee Classifieds, which will give it lots of exposure.  To save on wedding expenses down the line, you could always put the money you make from the gown into an account that’s earmarked for another dress when the time comes.

What hairstyles have you inspired as we near the warmer months?  Do you change your hair color with the seasons?  And how long is your hair at the moment?  (Longer than mine, I bet!)

I wear skinny jeans almost exclusively, but it can be hard to find the perfect-fitting pair.  I have wide-set hips and thinner legs, so most pants end up being either too tight around the waist or too baggy on my knees.

I’ve been coveting a pair of coral skinny trousers with a bit of slouch, so they can be dressed up or down.  But my budget is tight and my body is not model-thin.  The solution?  I made my own!

I started with a pair of coral bootcut pants, $29.95 at H&M.  I bought them a size up so that they’d be a little slouchy up top.  Then I got to work.

I turned the trousers inside-out, so that I could pin and sew them.

Starting at about the knee, I pinned the inseam close to my leg to simulate the fit of skinny jeans.  I gave myself a 1/2″ or so of room so I could slide them on and off.

Then, I sewed along the line I’d just created with my pins.  (You could always use a little fabric chalk to draw your line ahead of time if you’re worried about being able to sew in just the right place.)

Here’s the before and after shot (the leg on the left of the screen is pre-sewing and the leg on the right is after!)

And here’s the final product!

This project took half an hour and now I’ve got new pants that fit me perfectly!  Not too shabby, eh?

What are you up to this weekend?  Anyone else trying something new and exciting?  Have you ziplined before?  (Is it terrifying?!)

Here’s what you’ll need:

-a bag of leafy greens

-a green apple

-dried cranberries

-candied pecans

-crumbled gorgonzola cheese

-balsamic vinaigrette dressing

Step 1: Pour a few tablespoons of the balsamic into the bowl before you add the other ingredients (about 2 tbsp. per serving).  My mom taught me this great trick— it keeps the salad from getting soggy and over-doused in dressing after the fact!

Step 2: Add the leafy greens next, followed by the toppings (about 1/8 cup of each topping per serving).

Step 3: Toss & enjoy!

This salad is my go-to for diner parties because it’s always such a hit.  And lately, I’ve been keeping all of the ingredients on hand and making individual servings for myself at lunchtime!  It’s super hearty and oh-so-easy.  Try it out, and let me know what you think!

Here are Nick’s top 6 tips for keeping your hair happy and healthy in chilly weather…

1. Get Rich Quick.  Not your wallet—your shampoo.  Pick up a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner for the winter months, preferably one with vitamins and oils.  Nick suggests L’Oreal Professionnel’s Serie Expert Liss Ultime shampoo and conditioner.  “It’s good to change up the product you use every few months so your hair doesn’t build up immunity to the ingredients,” Nick points out.  

2. Be Exotic. “One of the hottest new trends is incorporating Argan oil into your beauty routine,” reports Nick.  Argan oil contains fatty acids, Vitamin E and antioxidants that restore your hair’s natural luster without a greasy shine.   Nick recommends using the oil like a serum.  “Use about a dime sized amount and comb it evenly through damp hair,” says Nick. Or, look for a conditioning treatment that contains Argan oil like Shu Uemura’s Silk Bloom Restorative Treatment.

3. DIY.  If you want a more wallet friendly way to add some essential nutrients to your ‘do, try adding a nickel sized amount of honey or olive oil to your daily conditioner.  Nick’s tips to creating your own spa night at home are to soak a hand towel in hot water and let it steam with you in the shower.  Massage your strands with the conditioning olive oil treatment and let it rest.  Wring out the hot towel and wrap it tightly around your head and relax for 30 minutes. Invite some friends over and you’ve got yourself a spa night!

4. Go All the Way. While blow drying and using hot tools definitely dries up your hair, it is somewhat unavoidable during the cold months.  “If you’re going to blow dry, always use a thermal spray or serum that will protect your hair,” urges Nick.  Try L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Absolut Repair Cellular Thermo Spray.   Moreover, Nick insists you go big or go home when blow drying. “Blow drying your hair half way will only create frizz and damage.  If you spend the extra 5 minutes using a round brush to blow your hair out to a smooth finish, it makes all the difference,” he says.

5. Avoid the Freeze. “Never go outside with wet hair,” says Penna.  Wet hair and even damp hair can easily freeze once temperatures drop into the 30s, and frozen strands mean split ends.  “If you have to run outside, be sure to work a quick squeeze of serum in your hair before tucking your hair beneath a hood or hat.”  Don’t be discouraged by hat hair—the serum will keep your hair smooth and moisturized, so you won’t have to worry about frizz or flatness.

6. Nourish from the Inside Out. Be sure to indulge in the season’s offerings—proteins, fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins and essential oils that help keep your hair healthy from the inside out.  “Believe it or not, eating balanced foods will improve your hair’s natural shine, bounce and body!  Many of winter’s seasonal goods, like dark leafy vegetables, beans and carrots provide the exact nutrients to promote shiny, silky hair.”

Step 1: Choose 3 colors and paint your nails with the lightest of the three (in my case, white).

Step 2: Wait a couple hours to ensure that your nail is FULLY dry or else the tape will rough it up.  When the time comes, cut up a small piece of tape in any pattern you like— triangles, zig-zags, even little straight strips.  Press the tape firmly over the nail to make sure you seal the edges.

Step 3: Paint your nail with the other two colors you’ve chosen.  Make sure you overlap onto the tape to get a clean edge.

Step 4: Once the polish is completely dry, peel off the tape.  Add a shiny top coat and voila!

This look is a little tedious, but also super easy to achieve.  Mix up your colors and patterns for a unique look that’ll definitely impress.

In celebration of our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple, we sat down together last night and sifted through our full video.

Hiring a videographer wasn’t originally part of our budget and we weren’t that attached to having footage of our big day, but after last night I am SO glad we went for it!

Here are five reasons to hire a videographer for your wedding:

They will catch things your photographer missed. There were a few DIY wedding details that I put a lot of effort into that our photographer forgot to take photos of.  I was thrilled to see that our wedding video filled in all of those gaps!  With HD video, I’ll be able to take screen shots of those little details and include them in our wedding album as photos.

You will have footage of special people. My grandma passed away three weeks ago, and I’ve been really appreciating the fact that she was so involved in our wedding.  Watching footage of us hugging and dancing together made me so emotional, but it also made me feel really close to her.  I’m so grateful to know that I will always have this footage of my family to look back on, even when they’re no longer living.

You’ll get to see parts of your wedding that you weren’t there for. A couple weeks ago, I found myself wondering what our cocktail hour was like— what music was played?  How did the appetizers look?  Last night, I found out!  It was really neat to see how every piece of our day came together.

You get to re-live your ceremony. Our wedding ceremony was probably the best moment of my entire life.  We were both laughing and crying through the whole thing, and I’d never felt more loved by Travis than I did in that moment.  Getting to watch that back was so romantic, and I love the idea that we can listen to the vows that we made each other any time in the future.

Your kids will get to see. Travis and I decided to go ahead with a videographer after watching my parents’ wedding video.  Photos are one thing, but getting to see your parents in their mid-20’s, talking, dancing and laughing… it’s priceless.  I want our kids to have that same opportunity, and I look forward to sitting down with them one day and taking them through each moment.

I also asked Sarah to get some good photos of just my parents, and I love how they turned out.  After 25 years together, my mom and dad are so adorably in love and I really feel like that comes through here!

Sarah was so relaxed and sweet and fun!  She made it easy to pose for the camera and found a great balance between setting up shots and letting everything fall into place.  We love how the pics turned out— we’ll cherish these forever!

Why does everyone enjoy bashing Valentine’s Day?!

Seriously, sweets, please help me understand!  I’ve seen tons of anti-V Day Facebook updates and blog posts floating around, from single and committed girls alike, and it’s making me sad!

I know that people like to call Valentine’s Day a “Hallmark Holiday” and I agree that you shouldn’t wait until February 14th to celebrate the love in your life (romantic or otherwise).  But what’s so bad about having a holiday that gives everyone an excuse to be a little extra lovey to their friends, family, and significant others?

My hope for you all is that you take time to acknowledge love all throughout the year and that the people in your life do the same.  So let’s re-frame the way we look at V-Day and take it as an excuse to get dressed up and go to dinner with someone special or stay home and play a board game by candle light.

If you’re single and feeling like February 14th is a day to be dreaded, put a little effort into making special Valentines for your girlfriends… I guarantee that it will make you feel good to put a smile on their faces!

I used two coats of Sally Hansen’s “Commander in Chic” as the base color.  After it dried completely, I took Wet ‘n Wild’s “Dreamy Poppy” and painted the tip of a toothpick.  I used the toothpick to dot my nails and voila!

Anyway, yesterday I ran my first-ever race— a 10k (6.2 miles) along the beautiful cliffs in Santa Cruz.  It was so clear and sunny I almost forgot that it was February!  I started training a few months ago, and my overall goal is to run a half marathon (13.1 miles) toward the end of April!

Yesterday’s race was super rewarding, and I was so happy to share the experience alongside my sweet Momma :)  She’s been a runner forever and has done countless races, but I was especially proud of her for running this one during such an emotional time.  Here are a few photos…

We ended the morning by going out to breakfast and then moseyed home to watch the Super Bowl.  Not a bad Sunday.

Today, I’m going to show you the simple steps to re-create this look for your big day!  (Granted, my version is a little toned-down for real life vs. the runway look.)

Step 1: Start with a fresh palette. Groom your brows, moisturize, and apply foundation & concealer as usual.  (Find tips on brow grooming here and here, and learn how to cover up dark under-eye circles here!)

Step 2: Highlight. Highlighting is a BIG part of this look.  Make sure to apply yours on your cheekbones & brow bones, on the bridge of your nose, along your upper lip, and on the inside of your eyes.

Step 3: Add liner. Line your upper lid with black eyeliner, starting with a thin line on your inner corner and ending with a thick, smudgy line toward your outer lid.  Softly line the outer corners of your bottom lids, too.

Step 4: Prepare your lashes. Grab a pair of false eyelashes and cut one of them in half.

Step 5: Apply false lashes. Place the mini-strips on the outer corner of your eyes.  If needed, “blend” them with your natural lashes by applying a few individual lashes to the middle of your lid.

Step 6: Finish it off! Once your lashes are in place, dust a little bit of black eyeshadow on your outer lids.  Top off the look with some glossy lip balm, and you’re set!

I wrapped this present for Travis’ dad using parchment wrapping paper from Target (I believe it’s $2/roll).  It’s a simple, clean paper appropriate for men or women.

I’m curious to know what you think about ‘em…

Are you a fan of colored jeans?  Do you own a pair (or two)?  Are there certain colors that are better than others?  Tell me about it in the comments!

We had some friends over on Saturday night and I used the opportunity to bust my new pans out.  The result was so easy and tasty, I just had to share with you!

I started with Ghirardelli brownie mix because it doesn’t get much easier or more delicious than that.  After I had the batter, I added 2 teaspoons of orange zest.  Then, I baked the mini cakes at 325 degrees for 18-20 minutes.  And look how cute they were when they came out!

I decided to incorporate a sweet surprise in the middle hole, so I made a go-to topping of mine by mixing marshmallow creme with equal parts cream cheese.  (It’s a tangy, sweet combo that tastes good on just about anything.)  I used an icing bag to fill the little holes.

Then, I frosted the top and adorned each cake with edible pearls.

These were such a hit and way too easy to make.

As a woman with sparse brows, I need all the help I can get.  And I absolutely adore my eyebrow wand.

When you’ve tweezed your brows and filled them in, spray this little brush with a strong hold hair spray and comb your eyebrows into place.  They’ll stay perfectly groomed all day… no fly-aways!

This also works on stubborn little wispy hairs around your hairline.  The brush puts things in their place without an overly hair-sprayed, slicked back look.

I started with a white shirt (I used a Target “boyfriend” tee— one of my favorite everyday t-shirts) and dampened it.

Then, after separating the front and back with a few plastic lids, I took Elmer’s glue (the blue gel kind… that’s important) and wrote the words to my favorite poem on the front.  If you’re more artistic, you could draw a picture.  Or you could do crazy squiggly lines all over the shirt.  The possibilities are endless!

After the shirt and glue have dried (I waited overnight), grab your favorite hue of RIT dye and create a cool dye bath.  (If it’s too hot, you’ll mess with the glue, so dissolve the dye into a few cups of super hot water first and then add it to a larger bowl of cool water before you submerge your tee.)

Rather than rinsing right away, wring out lay out your freshly-dyed tee and let it air dry until the majority of the moisture is gone.  Then, soak it in cool, soapy water for 15 minutes to dissolve the last of the glue.

Wash & dry normally and enjoy your new creation!

Though this project was a bit time consuming, it was super easy and fun to make.  I’m already plotting future shirt designs…

We always order through Overnight Prints, and I especially had fun with our holiday cards because we added rounded corners and a matte finish to make them look a little different.

I like the freedom of using postcards because you can design everything yourself, so you know that whatever message you’re sending will be 100% unique to you.  Plus, they only cost 28 cents to mail!

I was still a teenager when Travis and I  started dating, so I didn’t enter our relationship with any sort of deadline for marriage.  But soon into our relationship, when I realized that he was the man I would marry, I started timing everything out.  I wanted to get engaged the summer after we graduated college and married a year later, on our 4 year anniversary.

And guess what?  That’s exactly what happened!

I know some women with age-related timelines.  Some want to get married by age 30, some want a proposal by 27, etc… I have the feeling that it’s pretty natural for women to set a deadline for marriage, especially if they want to start a family.  I’m curious to know how many of you have one, too…

I feel like resolutions get a bad rap.  Yes, some people give up on theirs right away, but not all resolutions are impossible to complete.  I’ve decided to make a few, and I thought I’d share them with you all.

1) Take more pictures.

2) Say “yes” more often.

3) Do more “how-to” posts on the blog.

My resolutions are easy to start and maintain, but for whatever reason, I haven’t put the energy into them thus far.  I’m looking forward to chipping away on them right away!

We made a pit stop in San Luis Obispo for lunch, and it felt like Summer!

Then, we visited Solvang… an old Dutch town about an hour north of Santa Barbara.

We enjoyed yummy baked goods and avocado hummus (my favorite!!) from the farmer’s market!

When we arrived in Santa Barbara, we took a walk along the pier at sunset…

…and enjoyed dinner and drinks at a little Italian bistro on State St.

Today, we plan to rent cruisers and take a long bike ride along the water… what a wonderful escape from life in the city!
